The American Express Gold Card earns 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, with up to $324 in annual statement credits — Uber Cash, dining credit, Dunkin', and Resy. The $325 annual fee is roughly covered by the credits alone. Plus an elevated welcome bonus through October 30, 2026.

What makes the American Express Gold Card different

The American Express Gold Card is built around food. You earn 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide (on up to $50,000 per calendar year) and 4X at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year), the strongest combined food-spend earn rate of any mainstream credit card. For someone who runs a typical American budget — restaurants plus groceries plus delivery — Amex Gold compounds points faster than any cash-back card and faster than most travel cards at this fee level. Membership Rewards are also one of the most flexible point currencies on the market, with transfers to more than 20 airline and hotel partners and a baseline 1¢-per-point redemption through Amex Travel.

Outside of food, the American Express Gold Card was refreshed in 2026 to add stronger travel earn rates: 5X on prepaid hotels and 3X on flights booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app. Everything else earns 1X. Unlike many American Express cards in the lineup, the Amex Gold has no foreign transaction fees, which makes it a credible primary credit card for international dining. Compared to other Amex cards like the Platinum or the Green, the Gold is the food-focused option in the American Express cards lineup. See the official American Express Gold Card page for the full benefits list.

Annual credits: how the $324 in Uber Cash, dining, Dunkin', and Resy stacks up

The $325 annual fee on the American Express Gold Card is offset by up to $324 in annual statement credits, broken into four monthly or semi-annual buckets. You get $10 in Uber Cash every month (up to $120/year) when you add the card to your Uber account, usable on rides and Uber Eats orders in the U.S. You get up to $10 in monthly dining credit at Grubhub, Seamless, Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wonder ($120/year). You get up to $7 monthly at U.S. Dunkin' locations ($84/year). And you get up to $100 annually at Resy restaurants, paid as two $50 semi-annual statement credits at 10,000+ qualifying U.S. Resy spots.

Stacked together, that is $324 in published credits against a $325 annual fee — so for any cardholder who would already spend at Uber, Grubhub, Dunkin', or Resy restaurants in a normal month, the math works out to a roughly net-zero annual cost. Most cardholders also realize value from the welcome bonus and the 4X Membership Rewards earn rate on top of that. Note that credits are use-it-or-lose-it on a monthly cadence, so they require a small habit to fully extract.

Who should consider the American Express Gold Card

The Amex Gold Card is built for someone who spends meaningfully on food — restaurants, takeout, and groceries combined. If your monthly food budget regularly exceeds $1,000, the 4X earn rate on Membership Rewards alone covers the $325 annual fee in points value before you factor in the credits. The Amex Gold also fits a traveler who books flights and prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, since the refreshed 3X/5X earn rates apply on those bookings without the all-in cost of the $695 Amex Platinum. Approval typically requires good to excellent credit (FICO 670+, with most approvals at 700+), a U.S. address, and a verifiable source of income. American Express has overhauled its approval process so you can see your exact welcome offer before a hard credit pull.

Bottom line on the American Express Gold Card

If you spend meaningfully on food — restaurants, groceries, delivery, dining out — the American Express Gold Card is the strongest food-focused credit card on the market in 2026. The $325 annual fee is offset by up to $324 in monthly statement credits, the 4X Membership Rewards earn rate on restaurants and U.S. supermarkets compounds points faster than any cash-back card, and the refreshed 3X/5X earn rates on Amex Travel make it a credible secondary travel card. The elevated welcome bonus of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards through October 30, 2026, is the strongest in this fee tier.
